Math Puzzles workshop for kids aged 6 to 14
Where: Anna Centenary Library, Chennai.
When: February 11, Sunday 11 AM.

Glad to share highlights about the “Math puzzles” workshop happened in Anna Centenary Library, Chennai. The workshop had more than 100+ government school students and 30+ students from other schools and many parents.
It was heart warming to see the enthusiasm buzzing in the air among students. As most of the students belonged to primary classes, the workshop focused on solving primary Math puzzles!
The main focus of the workshop is to share technique to solve (how to approach) Math puzzles using UPER framework developed by The GYM Foundation. UPER stands for,
Understand
Plan
Execute
Reflect
To make the workshop effective, I opened up the floor with students on stage to solve puzzles. It was indeed good to see many students volunteering to work on board! When students struggle on “How to start?”, the possible approaches outlined as part of “Understand” in UPER, helped children take the first steps. The Mathematical recording tools and ways as part of “Plan” in UPER, took them to the next stage of solving Math puzzles.
Children acknowledged that the techniques shared as part of Understand and Plan helped them enjoy solving Math puzzles, rather than getting stuck and frustrated!
The main focus of this workshop was “To cultivate interest in solving Math puzzles by sharing techniques on How to solve” and I was glad to hear from children the words during the end that they should “Understand and Plan” and not “Jump to directly solve” puzzles.
The workshop outcome resonates well with the intention behind the start of The GYM Foundation,
“When each child is provided with an environment that `”Ignites their innate curiosity”, “Methodology that enhances participation and learning”, “Education content that challenge their minds”, all children can pursue Mathematics as an interesting subject and thrive in their Mathematical learning in Schools, other programs and competitions.”
